Butter Rolls

4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 cup shortening or butter
1/4 cup white sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
1 1/2 cups cold water
1 tablespoon vegetable oil


1. Mix together flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
2. Mix in shortening. Mix in water.
3. Turn out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead by hand for 20 minutes.
4. Cover dough with oil. Place dough in a bowl, cover, and proof for 1 hour.
5. Form rolls, and place on a greased baking tray. Proof for 45 minutes.
6. Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 12 to 14 minutes.

Immediately brush the tops with butter using a pastry brush
