1 tb ev olive oil
1 onion, chopped
2 lbs cubed stew meat
2 tsp steak spice
2 cups water, or enough to cover
4 packages dry brown gravy mix
4-5 cups water
1 small turnip, peeled and quartered
4 carrots, peeled and quartered
7 potatoes, peeled and quartered
1 1/2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
3/4 tsp salt
3 tb shortening
3/4 cup milk
1-Heat oil in large pot. Add onion and meat, sprinkle 1 tsp steak spice and stir well. Sprinkle rest steak spice and stir until meat is well browned, 10 minutes.
2-pour 2 cups of water to cover the meat, bring to boil making sure to scrape bottom of pan well. Cover, reduce heat and simmer about 2 hrs. Remove meat and set aside.
3- whisk gravy mix and 4 cups of water and add to juices in pot. Bring to boil, stir meat back in, add turnip and carrots. Cover and simmer about 20 minutes adding more water if needed. Stir in potatoes, cover and simmer for additional 20 minutes.
4- Dumplings: mix flour, salt and baking powder in bowl. Cut in shortening until crumbly. Pour in milk and lightly stir until dough forms.
5- remove 2 cups of liquid and set aside. Drop dumplings, by spoonful into pot, cover and simmer for 20 minutes. Pour reserved gravy back over dumplings, stir lightly and serve.
